This week we’re exploring how to activate your heart intelligence. Yesterday, we talked about becoming familiar with feeling the physical space in and around your heart and breathing through that area to heighten sensation there. In today’s post, we’ll discover how to access a “neutral” state, no matter what you’re feeling or what’s going on around you.
The ability to access neutral is a powerful skill that enables you to be relaxed and effective in all circumstances and conditions. This is Step Two in the process of activating heart intelligence.
When you focus your attention into the area of your heart, you become more sensitive to your emotions. Rather than blocking them out, you tune into the feeling level. When you do that, you may feel nothing at all or you may be overwhelmed with feeling. These two extremes are especially likely if you usually don’t pay close attention to your emotions.
When you feel strong emotion, it’s important to be able to engage your emotion without being lost in it. You want to gather the information your emotions offer you without being carried away by it. The ability to observe without reacting to your feelings is called accessing “neutral.”
So how do you do that?
You access neutral by being aware of your feelings, accepting them exactly as they are, and asking yourself what they are trying to tell you.
Realize that your feelings come and go. When they arise you have an opportunity to learn more about yourself and what is happening around you. Approach them with a curiosity about what you can discover. As you “soak” your feelings in curious awareness without reacting to them, they share their information and simultaneously lose their “all-consuming” quality. As a result, you come into neutral.
Practice the skill of accessing neutral whenever strong feelings arise and see how this shifts your perspective.
